Information as to why Webnetism have no longer support IE 11 as standard
We no longer develop and test for browser support in IE 11. The reasons for this are lack of Microsoft support, security updates, the additional cost of development for compatibility & it’s current very small userbase.
Recommended alternative browsers
Internet Explorer is end of lifecycle as of June 15 2022
Internet Explorer (IE) 11 desktop application will end support for certain operating systems starting June 15, 2022. Customers are encouraged to move to Microsoft Edge with IE mode. IE mode enables backward compatibility and will be supported through at least 2029.
Security
Having Internet Explorer on your computer can expose you to security threats. In order to protect your data, we would recommend not only dropping support for IE11, but also uninstalling it from your computer.
Additional development time
Internet Explorer is not an Evergreen web browser, which means it does not automatically update itself on start up. Most modern web browsers are evergreen & will provide users with the latest features and security patches.
Ensuring everything is compatible with IE11 takes extra time development time as it utilises older JavaScript and CSS. This means our development team needs to spend more time to add backwards compatibility to include out of date code so that the project runs correctly in IE.
JavaScript
IE11 doesn’t support modern JavaScript and supporting IE11-compatible websites can mean using outdated JavaScript. Additional code implementations (Polyfills) can be used to include missing features, but this is not ideal & adds to development time. This can limit your ability to use the features that newer JavaScript standards provide.
CSS
IE11 doesn’t support a lot of modern CSS properties, which means design and layout features are more limited & code is outdated.
Average usage percentage is very small
According statscouter.com less than 2% of desktop and laptop web traffic comes from Internet Explorer and it makes up less than 3% of all web traffic across all devices. So its most likely the large majority of users are not coming to your website using IE, however it may be worth checking Google Analytics to see if you have a large percentage of users that are.
